Goalkeeper Despite barely getting any dirt on his gloves, new JDT goalkeeper Farizal Marlias was on alert whenever Pahang threatened to attack, especially in the latter stages of the match when the away side piled on some pressure, as he grabbed his first clean sheet of the season.
Defenders It looks like R. Gopinathan has finally found his match in S. Kunanlan. Speedy and disciplined, the makeshift right-back was often quick to close the Pahang star down and prevent him from getting to the ball first. Not a lot of players can claim to have marked Dickson Nwakaeme out of a game, but Marcos Antonio certainly can. The Brazilian put on a strong performance to keep the Pahang forward quiet and worked in tandem with midfielder turned defender Junior Eldstal. To top it off, he also scored the opening goal for JDT. Having already used all their substitutes, Kelantan had to play with 10 men for the majority of the second-half against ATM after Brendan Gan limped off due to an injury. But they managed to hold on for a win partly due to Jonathan McKain, who put in a commanding performance in front of his goalkeeper. His clearance in the 62nd minute indirectly led to Kelantan’s second goal. The left channel of the LionsXII was almost impenetrable with Hafiz Sujad putting in a good shift. The 24-year-old full-back was effective in thwarting PDRM’s threat and making attacking runs down the wing, which saw him grabbing a goal.
Midfielders Against PDRM, LionsXII’s Gabriel Quak easily had one of his best games. The 5-3 demolition of the Malaysian Premier League winners was led by the right winger, who brilliantly grabbed the opening goal by rounding the goalkeeper and ripping the ball into the back of the net. Another LionsXII midfielder who impressed against the Police was Izzdin Shafiq, who read the game expertly and controlled the tempo well. To cap off his night, he scored a goal by delightfully chipping over the goalkeeper in the second-half, which defender Fadhil Hashim was unable to clear. If their 2-0 win over Selangor indicated anything, set pieces could be Terengganu’s forte this year and their main man would be Gustavo Lopez. One of the Argentinian’s corners led to his side’s first goal of the night and his wonderful free-kick in the second-half beat an outstretched Norazlan Razali at the near post. Long-time Sarawak servant Shahrol Saperi showed that he can still contribute to the team as he assisted a goal and then salvaged a point for his team right at the death with a strike just outside the box against Felda United. After spending a few years away from Perak at the Harimau Muda set-up, Nurridzuan Abu Hassan wasted no time to reintroduce himself to the home crowd. The 22-year-old scored a well-taken goal and won a penalty for his home state team, which was unfortunately missed by Charles Souza.
Forward The score-line at the Jalan Besar Stadium would’ve been more humiliating for Azman Adnan’s men if it was not for Dramane Traore, who scored a second-half hat-trick to set up a nervy finish to the match.
MSL Preview: Five things to look out for in Gameweek 2
The Malaysian Super League returns after a woeful week for Malaysian football and the country as a whole...
Silent night Following the passing of renowned sports commentator Dato’ Hasbullah Awang and religious teacher Tok Guru Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, most Ultra groups have pledged that no chanting will be performed during games to pay respect to the deceased. Besides that, the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) have confirmed that there will be a one minute’s silence before each Super League and Premier League match.
Depleted Red Warriors welcome in-form LionsXII Fresh from thrashing PDRM 5-3 in their first match of the season, the LionsXII will be looking forward to add Kelantan to their list of scalps. As for the home side, they won in their opening match as well, but suffered costly injuries. Brendan Gan is out for the season while Noor Hazrul Mustafa, Nor Farhan Muhammad and Farisham Ismail picked up knocks as well. It is unsure if the latter three will be available for the clash, which has been postponed to the following day, but the Red Warriors will have Ahmad Fakri available after serving his one-match suspension.
A Kelantan reunion in Paroi Some fans might remember about how ATM boss B. Sathianathan was suspended for six months after the former Kelantan head coach criticised the Super League schedule in 2011. His replacement? Perak head coach M. Karathu. The duo then worked together for a while with Sathianathan being allowed to serve his suspension while overseeing Kelantan’s football academy, before both leaving their respective posts months later. They might have some friendly chat to reminisce about their Kelantan days, but for 90 minutes, they will be at each other’s throats… hopefully not literally. Watch ATM vs Perak on TV1 at 8:45pm on February 14th.
No love lost between Pahang and Selangor It may be Valentine’s Day, but Pahang and Selangor will not be exchanging chocolate as both teams look to bounce back from their respective opening gameweek defeats. With JDT looking to bounce back from their AFC Champions League exit and unlikely to drop points against PDRM, the traditional rivals know a victory is a must to keep up with the Southern Tigers. Watch Pahang vs Selangor on TV3 at 8:45pm on February 14th.
"So, who's the home team again?" They say sharing is caring, but Sime Darby and Felda United will be out to get each other in the upcoming clash at the Selayang Stadium. Sime Darby are technically the home side of this match, but the stadium is also being used by Felda as their home ground until they finally get their own in Jengka, Pahang in a few years' time.
*BONUS* "Hey, where's that guy...?" Terengganu will travel to Sarawak with one less foreign player in their squad following the release of Lebanon attacker Hassan Moni Chito, who failed to recover from his thigh injury. Not that the Crocs can hope that his absence will make any difference, as the Turtles easily dispatched Selangor last week without him.
Saje nak update ape yang latest skarang ni. expectation: takde tindakan daripada FAM menandangkan team Pahang kan anak emas FAM sepanjang aku follow Liga Malaysia ni tak penah lagi aku tengok Persatuan Bolasepak Pahang kena denda.
