EPL champions Manchester City congratulate Safuwan Baharudin on 1st A-League goal
SINGAPORE - Local footballer Safuwan Baharudin's first goal for A-League side Melbourne City has not gone unnoticed.
The 23-year-old's achievement in scoring the first ever goal by a Singaporean in Australia's top football league was congratulated by English Premier League champions Manchester City, which is owned by the same group that owns Melbourne City.
Safuwan, a Manchester United fan, was on hand at the back post against Adelaide United on Friday to smash home an equaliser for his side in the 52nd minute. The match ended in a 3-1 victory for City.
After the game, the English club ran a report on its official website titled "Singaporean star scores first goal for Melbourne City", and tweeted: "Well done to @melbournecity ace Safuwan Baharudin for making history today!". The tweet was retweeted more than 1,300 times and favourited more than 450 times
The Football Association of Singapore also congratulated Safuwan for the goal on its Facebook page: "Safuwan has scored his first goal for Melbourne City FC!"
Safuwan was on Saturday named the Melbourne City man of the match after a fan vote. The club said on its Facebook page: "The versatile Singaporean was played in multiple positions against Adelaide United FC and looked unfazed by each move, scoring his debut goal for the Club. Well done Safuwan!"
Safuwan's Instagram followers took to the social media platform to heap praise on the versatile defender.
Taneugene26k10 wrote "Congrats for scoring your first A-League goal for Melbourne City bro!!!", while jonobeewaankonobi said: "Great goal last night."
