Starting this month, taking a taxi ride anywhere on Penang island will only cost RM5, thanks to MyTeksi.
MyTeksi city manager Loh Ji Yuan said since Penang taxis had long suffered a bad reputation of overcharging and refusing to use the meter, the move would hopefully to do away with such perceptions.
The special RM5 rate applies for rides all around the island round-the-clock for any bookings made through the MyTeksi app.
“MyTeksi rate is 20% lower than other taxis. So we hope to change the negative perception against taxis with this promotion,” he told reporters during a press conference to launch the special promotion at Esplanade this morning.
MyTeksi is a GPS-enhanced taxi dispatch service where passengers can book rides through a smartphone app.
“MyTeksi started in Penang last April and has seen a 900% increase in bookings since its launch,” said Loh.
MyTeksi also serves in Klang Valley and Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Cyberjaya, Johor Baru and Kuching.
Loh said MyTeksi not only provided cheaper rides but passengers would be able to know the cost of a ride as the total price, calculated on the distance, will be shown when they book through the app.
“This will solve all woes of having to haggle for a reasonable price whenever a passenger takes a cab,” Loh said.
“Safety is another factor where passengers will know who their drivers are and they can even share the ride they booked with their friends and relatives.”
There are about 3,000 registered taxis in Penang and one out of three taxis here use the MyTeksi app.
