Data collected from the United States (US) Social Security Administration shows that quite a number of American girls are named after the country.
An online publication, Swimmingly, says Malaysia is the country that has inspired the most baby names for the whole of 2013.
About 630 girls were known as Malaysia, followed by Kenya (462 girls and 10 boys), America (346 girls), India (255 girls), Ireland (252 girls), Holland (206 girls and 44 boys), Egypt (163 girls and 36 boys), Italy (86 girls), Great Britain (31 boys and 27 girls) and China (44 girls).
Other countries that have inspired baby names include Australia, Mali, Brazil, Trinidad and Tobago, New Zealand, Cyprus, Sierra Leone and Jamaica.
The report says that apart from the sound of the name, the Malaysia name craze may have been prompted by reality television star Malaysia Pargo, the wife of popular American professional basketball player Jannero Pargo.
Pargo (Malaysia) became a recent hit in the reality TV show Basketball Wives LA.
The list done by Swimmingly, however, omitted Jordan, Israel, Georgia and Chad off the list under the impression that those baby names were not in direct reference to the countries.
Should they have made the list, there are 7,128 boys and 1,221 girls named Jordan, 1,457 boys and 45 girls named Israel, 1,250 girls named Georgia and 357 Chads registered.
